The Great Spiral

I’ve been having the same conversation with different creatives this week and it all centres around change in business. The general consensus is that we all feel like we’re flippy floppy fails when we change – be it services, focus, direction, pricing – and while we crave consistency in business, change is actually the only constant.

I’m not sure what it’s like in the non-creative fields, but here’s how I feel in mine.

I think of my business journey like a great spiral that’s the opposite of a tornado. It feels like trying to get my head out of the chaos of the clouds in order to make landfall, to ground.

At some point, roots will hold and I’ll feel secure enough to reach back through the skies to beyond. It’s a weird thought right? But hey, what do I know? I’m a bit weird at the best of times (but like a good weird though 😂).

The thing that gets most creatives is that when we think “That’s it, that’s land!”, it’s not and the spiral narrows and the space between deepens. I thought I’d made landfall late last year, I hadn’t. I think I’ve hit it now and can almost feel roots gingerly testing the dirt. But have I? Time will tell.

The funniest part is that this is a full conversation most creatives have internally. From the outside though, everyone will tell us that our style, our values and our vision are really clear. 🤷‍♀️ Internally, it’s still chaotic.

I wonder what things would look like if we didn’t second guess everything? In business and in life! What do you think?

Until next time,
